The emergence of the powerful Classy Slut: It's not ok to slander your fellow women, say the single girls of today, but at the same time it seems that if you call yourself a slut, it's ok. Women are reclaiming the word and redefining it as a positive term. A slut by definition is either a dirty, slovenly woman or an immoral or dissolute woman or prostitute.

The term Slut has always been a dirty word - a word used to describe a woman who enjoys sex as morally corrupt. Remember the bitchy gossip about the school slut, the slut from uni or the slut at work? This girl only needed to be pretty and sexy and get a lot of male attention to be branded with the negative label.

"Sex and the city" had it´s impact and recently there has been a change in attitude toward the word slut. Whist victims of slut smear campaigns are speaking out in books, on talk show and in documentaries another group of young women are emerging. These women are proudly calling themselves Classy Sluts. Far from seeing the term slut as negative, these women view it as a title that elevates them as being sexy independent women who know what they want - and get it! Something like the word Stud, except for women. They remove themselves from the traditional slut stereotype because they are in control of their sex lives: they choose who they sleep with and when. They are not interested in developing long-term relationships with men but in achieving sexual gratification and having fun.

Typically, a Classy Slut will lead a full, busy life and have come to a stage where they can't fit the emotional, mental and time demands of a relationship into their schedule. A relationship is not the top priority - they might be on a personal growth mission, steep career ladder or health programme that requires them to spend time alone and focused. Nevertheless, they still want high quality, uncomplicated sex with men who know what do in the bedroom and are capable of not being too emotionally needy.

Like their male counterparts they acknowledge that at some point they will want to settle down and find a nice partner that they can bring home to meet mum and dad. But for now they are content to simply sew their wild oats, and date for the experience alone.
